Enthusiasm for calligraphy among Koreans in Ansan City

On October 26, 2025, the multicultural food festival [다문화음식 축제] was held at Wongokdong, Ansan City. There are many migrant workers and multicultural families living there. You can taste various multicultural foods during the festival. In the midst of the multicultural food festival, it was raining there.
Also, a group of Korean calligraphy enthusiasts participated at the multicultural food festival. They exhibited their calligraphy artwork at the festival. Mr. Oh Sunggon and his classmates were hosting a calligraphy booth. Whoever was enthusiastic about calligraphy could participate there. Calligraphy in Korea was well known back in the Chosun dynasty. This calligraphy class is just for hobbies and fun. They don't earn money from that. At the festival, you can see calligraphy artwork of Dokdo Islet. It was done by Oh Sunggon, chairman of Korea-Dokdo-Love. Further, Oh said Korea has islet disputes with neighboring countries.

In the East Sea of Korea, Dokdo Islet' geographical location is 87.4 km from the southeast side of Ulleungdo Island. It takes about 2 hours to travel from Ulleungdo to Dokdo by ship. Geographically, Dokdo Islet is closer to Korea compared to Japan. Korea stations security personnel on the Dokdo rock. In the West Sea of Korea, the Ieodo Islet is a submerged rock 4 meters below sea level at low tide. It is located 149 km from Marado Island in Korea. Ieodo Islet is also closer to Korea compared to China. Korea has an ocean research station on the rock.

The Morning Star of Korean Calligraphy Jeomsoon Park

Jun 9, 2023 Jeomsoon Park is a lecture on calligraphy at Wongokdong, Ansan City. Calligraphy in Korea was well known back in the Chosun dynasty. She has devoted herself here to volunteer work in this land of affection for about 40 years. She nurtures the training of the younger generation and is well known as a leader and respected by students. The sweat drops of her striving give students fiery passion.

At the moment, there are 20 students, 5 men and 15 women in the class. They will get a 1-year course certificate at the end of the year. Most students are approximately 50 and older, who usually have more free time. The younger people are busy with their lives so they can't attend this class, said Park. This calligraphy class is just for hobby and fun, not to make money. They exhibited their  calligrophy artwork at the end.

In 1974, Park got married to a real estate property dealer in Ansan and has lived there for about 45 years. She received 1 Prime Minister's award, 2 Gyeonggi governor's awards and 7 Ansan city mayor's awards.
